In December of 1985, out of curiosity, we came to Ste. Genevieve to
look at a wreck of a building, only to discover the beginning of the
rest of our lives. Over the next months we learned a great deal about
the history of the building and the "doability" of the restoration.
Because of the long history of providing lodging since 1805, our desire
to return it to a Bed and Breakfast Inn seemed proper and would provide
a much-needed asset to the community.

We began the restoration in July of 1986 and moved in August. When you
come to the Southern Hotel, you may view the photographic evidence of
the restoration as the albums are in the Saloon. Start with the blue
         one.

We know that this beautiful Federal brick building was built in the
1790s as a private home. The porches, belvedere, wing and sample room
were added soon after the original building. The newest feature to the
house is the dormers, put on in 1870.

Joseph Vorst, who bought the building in the 1860s, named it The
SOUTHERN HOTEL and promptly painted the name on the north side.

Follow the footsteps of the pioneers through Missouri's oldest and most
historic town. Ste. Genevieve has the greatest concentration of French
         Colonial buildings in North America.

Ste. Genevieve is the ideal place to stay for several days to visit
sites of historic interest and natural beauty on both sides of the
Mississippi. Within an easy drive are Hawn State Park, Pickle Springs
Natural Area, Hickory Canyon Wildlife Refuge, Magnolia Hollow
Conservation Area, Mark Twain National Forest and historic Kaskaskia
Island. Take the ferry across the river to experience other French
historic sites--Fort Kaskaskia state Park, Fort de Chartres, Prairie du
Rocher and the Pierre Menard Home.
